The concepts taught in the classroom are best examined and understood through working in the lab and field. Many courses require a corresponding lab class, but it wasn’t until I began working on an independent project that I began to fully grasp and synthesize the concepts from those courses. It is important to provide an environment that balances guidance in the lab and allowing students independent thought. I work to teach the students how to think about and dissect their problem rather than providing answers. Motivating students to read the primary literature on their projects helps them understand and develop experiments rather than simply following procedures.
